Stablecoin landscape briefing

A concise orientation on how well-designed stablecoins relate to payments, reserves, supervision and market structure. This is not a forecast and not investment advice.

Working definition

Well-designed stablecoins can combine price stability with the speed, programmability and always-on settlement capabilities of blockchain infrastructure. Designs vary. Fiat-backed, crypto-collateralised and other models do not share the same risk, legal claim or supervisory treatment.

Circulating supply above $300 billion (DefiLlama, August 2026) is a stock. Adjusted on-chain transfer volume of about $41.7 trillion year-to-date 2026 (Talos) is a flow. Neither figure proves that every token is suitable for institutional use. Both figures explain why central banks, regulators and commercial banks now treat the category as payments infrastructure rather than as a trading curiosity.

What to examine

Reserve composition and attestation. Redemption rights and queues. The banks and custodians behind the cash and securities. Travel-rule and sanctions screening at the speed of the rail. Interoperability with existing payment systems, including mobile money in African corridors.

Remittance context

World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide (Q3 2025) recorded an average cost of 8.46 percent to send $200 to sub-Saharan Africa, against a global average of 6.36 percent. That gap is one reason the GSCS series opens with the Africa Edition.
